Saints sent into exile by Kent

The Oxford Saints were defeated by conference rivals Kent Exiles on Sunday. After beating the Exiles 2 weeks ago the Saints struggled in the soaring temperatures with an undermanned squad.
Missing key personal on the defence and many players having to play both ways & out of position, Oxford struggled to keep up with the high flying conference leaders.
After their prior loss to the Saints it was Kent who came out looking to make a statement. On only their 2nd drive QB Aaron Griffiths found Sean Starwind with a pass from 22 yards out to give Kent a 6-0 lead.
Kent were soon 12-0 up. Oxfords injury ravaged defence found the going tuff against an in form Kent outfit. Griffiths completed another scoring pass, this time to Rob Welling from 4 yards out.
The Oxford offence then gave the home crowd something to cheer about. Jay Taylor scrambled out of the pocket and fired a scoring pass to Simon Greenwood from 16 yards out and his first touchdown as a Saints player, Newman missed the PAT, 12-6 to Kent.
The half ended with another Griffiths to Starwind touchdown pass & an 18-6 Kent lead.
The Saints had to come out strong in the 2nd half if they had any chance of a comeback. A diving interception from LB Andrew Day set up the offence in great field position. The Saints drove the ball down to the 1 yard line where Jay Taylor ran in for the touchdown, 18-12 & an Oxford comeback looked on.
Kent however had other ideas. The ensuing kick off saw Kent's Ryan Kelly field the ball and his searing pace saw him return the ball 74 yards down the sideline to the Saints 20 yard line. A couple of plays later saw Rob Stewart scamper into the end zone for a 24-12 lead and an end to any hopes the Saints had of turning the game around.
The Saints heads sunk and in the hot conditions the larger squad of the Exiles dominated the remainder of the game. With the Saints offence unable to do anything against a rampant Exile D, the exhausted Saints defence had to spend most of the time on the field and gave up a further 2 scores.
Griffiths fired his 4th touchdown pass of the day, this time to Richard McHugh. Then Stewart finished it off with his 2nd score to end the game 36-12 to the Exiles.
The Saints now have to win all of their remaining games to have any hopes of reaching the playoffs. Their next game is on the 22n June away to the Ipswich Cardinals.
