The Oxford Saints long wait to find out who they will be playing this year is finally over, with the release of the British American Football League 2008 schedule.
The Saints fixture list has thrown up some intriguing and very exciting match-ups.
Oxford will again be competing in the BAFL 1 Southern Conference along with opponents from last year the Ipswich Cardinals, Sussex Thunder & Kent Exiles, as well as the newly promoted Norwich Devils and the Southern Sundevils who were relegated from the premier division at the end of last year.
The Saints completed the double over both Sussex and Kent last time round but then lost twice to Ipswich (who are favourites this time to lift the conference title).
The fixtures against Southern Sundevils promise to be bruising, exciting encounters. The Saints have always proved to be Southerns bogey team over the years so the Sundevils will be looking to rewrite history in their battles this year.
The Saints have also had some electrifying wars with Norwich in the past. The two teams last met in Norwich back in 2002 when the game had to be abandoned at half time after a serious injury to one of the Saints players.
The Saints have been very busy over the winter, building both on and off the pitch. Saints inspirational Head Coach Chris Janes is back for another campaign as is most of his staff from 2007. Total control of the offence has been handed over to new offensive coordinator Keith Houin.
After the loss of retiring veteran QB Wayne Mayers, Coach Houin has rejuvenated the Saints offence, bringing in a new scheme, new positional coaches and some exciting new players.
Oxford was rocked by the retirement of four keys players at the end of last season. Veterans Wayne Mayers, Tony Porter, Troy Smith and Joe Grenidge all decided to call time on their playing carears. All big time players for the Saints and will be sorely missed.
The Saints are delighted to announce that Troy Smith will be staying with Oxford in his new role as Linebackers coach.
The good news for the Saints is they have been bolstered by the signing of a number of exciting rookies and the return of most of their vets from 2007.
The Saints first game is away to Norwich Devils on 13th April and their first home game is against Sussex Thunder on the 4th May at Oxford Rugby Club, North Hinksey, Oxford, Kick off 2.30pm.
