The Oxford Saints fell just short against the Leicester Falcons at Abingdon Rugby Club on Sunday. The Falcons were bolstered by the inclusion of quarterback Brad Van Pelt who had played professionally in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans before heading to Europe in this year.
Van Pelt found the early going tuff as he was intercepted by Saints cornerback Gatis Kozlouskis but his professional pedigree shone through minutes later when he raced 75 yards to open the scoring for the Falcons. The Saints responded immediately with quarterback Jay Taylor scoring a 1 yard touchdown for the Saints.
The Falcons and Saints traded touchdowns in the second period, with Van Pelt again showing his pedigree with a 25 yard pass to make the score 7 -14 to the Falcons. On the next drive the Saints scored again with Kyle Micallef going in on a 2 yard rush but Jonny Dover miss the point after make the score 13-14 at the interval.
The second half started much the same as the first half with both teams having long drives but nether offence could score. Late in the 3rd quarter the game was marred with a serious injury to inspirational linebacker Andrew Day, who left the field with a suspected broken leg.
Two plays later Van Pelt ran in his second touchdown of the game to increase the visitors lead to 20-13. The Saints defence stiffened in the final period with Van Pelt tackled for consecutive losses by Lee Hutton and Ian Harry. Johnny Dover kicked a 35 yard field goal to bring the Saints with 4 points but the Saints final drive fell just short in the final minute and the Falcons escaped with a narrow victory.
