Kyle Micallef scorched his way to a dazzling personal performance on Sunday, helping the Oxford Saints to a 48 – 20 victory over the Nottingham Caesars. Micallef accounted for 225 yards of offence and 4 amazing touchdowns as the Saints crushed the Caesars for the 2nd time this season. The victory takes the Saints to 6 wins and 1 loss, keeping them on a collision course with the BAFACL Division 1 play offs.
Micallef opened the scoring for the Saints with a 1st quarter touchdown. Offensive Co-ordinator Matt Coppinger was forced to kit up and stand in at QB for the opening quarter. Coppinger wasted no time in showing the home support that he had not lost any of the skills that made him one of the UK’s top players. Coppinger found Micallef open down the sideline and Micallef spun passed a couple of Casers before his jet filled boots propelled him down the outside for a dazzling score from 29 yards out, Johnny Dover kicked the PAT, Oxford up 7 – 0.
The Saints got the ball straight back, veteran LB Andrew Day intercepted a pass from Nottingham QB Daniel Johnson at midfield and slammed it back 17 yards to set the offense up once more.
Coppinger drove the Saints offense down to the 2 yard line of the Caesars where Human Bowling Ball Chris Ellis smashed into the end zone for the Saints, Dover slotted the PAT, Saints up 14 – 0.
The 2nd quarter saw the Saints continue their offensive onslaught of the Caesars defence. Ellis again barged his brutal self into the end zone from 2 yards out, steam rolling over would be tacklers and leaving a stream of destruction and flattened Caesars in his wake. Dover kicked the PAT, Saints up 21 – 0.
If things couldn’t get any worse for the Caesars, Oxfords starting QB Jay Taylor had now entered the fray after arriving late for the game. Taylor (determined to make up for lost time) went straight to the air and found TE Elliot Howes in the end zone for another Saints score, Johnny ‘Automatic’ Dover nailed the PAT, Saints up 28 – 0.
The Caesars finally got some joy late in the half. Johnson put a decent drive together and aided by a personal foul on Oxford’s Rukevwe Zireghe, Nottingham found themselves in the Saints red zone. Johnson found Philip Hine in the Saints end zone for the touchdown, Johnson kicked the PAT, Saints up 28 – 7 at the interval.
The late score from Nottingham to end the 1st half only served to ignite the Saints further and the 3rd quarter was all about Oxford.
Oxford had the ball first to open the 2nd half. Taylor wasted no time in killing the game off as a contest. A couple of good gains on pass plays to TE’s Adam Newman and James Canavan and a number of bone crushing runs up the middle from Ellis again took the Saints into striking distance. Micallef took the handoff from Taylor and knifed his way straight through the Caesars defence with a blistering turn of pace for an 18 yard touchdown, Dover booted the PAT, Saints up 35 – 7.
After their slip at the end of the 1st half, the Saints defence were back to a pulsating level. Johnny Dover, Ian Harry and Austin Wilcox all broke up plays to get the ball back for Oxford.
Jay Taylor again moved his offense down field. A big gain on a screen pass to Mike Oluwole helped manuver the Saints within touching distance of the Caesars goal line. Micallef sliced into the end zone on a 4 yard run and the game had descended into a rout, Dover again tagged on the PAT, Saints 42 – 7 up.
The 4th quarter saw the Saints coaching staff empty their bench to give fringe players some much needed game time. With the Caesars still fighting until the bitter end, the 4th quarter remained interesting. QB Johnson put another good drive together for Nottingham. Oxford old boy Simon Dale powered over from 1 yard out to give the Caesars a consolation score, Johnson’s PAT was good, Saints up 42 – 14.
However, the Saints stuck straight back. With the ball just inside his own half, Taylor dropped back to pass and found Micallef open with a little dink across the middle. Micallef took the short pass and looked certain to be crunched by two tacklers, Micallef ducked under the assault to somehow escape, he then jinked past one tackler and then spun passed another two before blazing into the end zone from 52 yards out, leaving a trail of scorched Caesars behind him, Jay Taylor missed the 2 point PAT attempt, Oxford up 48 – 14.
Nottingham managed to bag themselves another consolation score at the end of the game. Simon Dale going in from 2 yards out, the PAT failed and the Saints ran out easy winners 48 – 20.
The Saints travel to the South Wales Warriors next on 14th July.
