Taylor Sinks Falcons - Saints 19 Falcons 3

QB Jay Taylor threw two 4th quarter touchdowns to bury the plucky Falcons on Sunday, sending the Oxford Saints to a 5 and 1 record. The Saints took on Division 1 new boys the Leicester Falcons in a hot, humid, partisan Leicester home ground.

The 1st half was dominated by both teams’ defences. Oxford’s ‘Pain Gang’ defence kept the Falcons potent running game in check for the whole of the game with some blistering displays of run defence.

Tackle by Dean BryanBig plays form Stephen Bentley & Ian Harry and sacks from Richard Carr & Dean Bryan contributed to a brutal display of defensive football from the Saints early on. The Falcons defence was not to be outshone though and kept the shackles well and truly on the Saints Offence early doors.

The closest the scoreboard operators got from getting out of their deck chairs in the 1st quarter was a 32 yard Field Goal attempt from Oxfords Adam Newman that was blocked by the Falcons.

The 2nd quarter was much the same as the 1st. Time & time again both offenses were shut down by ferocious play from both teams’ defences.

The Falcons had a chance to go in front with a 41 yard Field Goal attempt from Andrew Plant, Stephen Bentley blocked it for the Saints to keep the game scoreless.

The Falcons D got the ball straight back & their offence finally got a little bit of success moving the ball. The Falcons moved the ball down to the Saints 2o yard line where a huge sack from Saints Chris Ellis on 3rd down halted the Falcons drive. Plant came on for the Falcons to attempt a 26 yard Field Gaol which he nailed with ease to put the home side up 3 – 0 at the interval.

The 2nd half saw a different Oxford side come out. The Falcons had the ball first. Having no joy running the ball against a lethal Saints run defence, the Falcons took flight. Leicester put some good passing plays together & moved into a threatening position inside the Saints half. A sack from Lee ‘The Hitman’ Hutton & then another from Ellis ended the Falcons drive, the Saints offence took over on downs.

Adam NewmanQB Jay Taylor marshalled his Oxford troops on a storming drive towards the Falcons end zone. A couple of big runs from Kyle Micallef & a 16 yard pass to Adam Newman saw the Saints knocking on the door of the Falcons end zone. Jay Taylor powered his way over from the 1 yard line for the Saints 1st touchdown, Newman missed the PAT but the Saints had the lead 6 – 3.

The Saints defence again held on the next drive to take the game into the 4th quarter with the Saints noses just in front.

With the Saints offence now firing on all cylinders, the Falcons D began to tire in the blazing sun. Another sound drive from Oxford took the Saints deep into Falcon territory. Jay Taylor found Kyle Micallef open & Micallef raced into the end zone for a 14 yard touchdown, the Saints failed on a 2 point PAT attempt but now led 12 – 3.

D make the tackleThe Saints defence continued their domination of the Falcons. Excellent work in the Saints secondary from Scott Tolley, Karl Sears, Gattis Kazlowkis & Ali Galbraith repeatedly denied the Falcons receivers any room. Lee Hutton smashed the Falcons QB forcing a fumble which the grateful Dean Bryan scooped up for Oxford to set the Saints offence up to deliver the killer blow.

Jay Taylor and the offence took over with a short field and wasted no time in finishing the Falcons off. Taylor dropped back to pass and let a rocket go across the middle to find Adam Newman streaking past a couple of defenders to haul the Taylor made exocet in & barge his way into the end zone for the killer score, Phil Ghouldie kicked the PAT to put the Saints up 19 – 3.

The Saints D held firm for the remainder of the game to give the Saints their 5th win of the year.

The Saints take on the Nottingham Caesars at home this Sunday as they continue their charge towards the play offs.

The game kicks off at 2.30pm at Abingdon Rugby club.
