Saints return for 2010

This Sunday sees the return of the new look Oxford Saints. After a successful 8-2 campaign in 2009, the club look towards a Division 1 championship and promotion into the Premiership.

For a team with Premiership dreams, you need to have Premiership credentials and with that in mind the Saints have added key personnel to their roster.

Former London Olympian Matt Coppinger joins as Offensive Co-ordinator bringing his experience as a Premiership player and coach. WR Chris Reynolds joins the Saints from the Farnham Knights and adds experience to a receiver corps featuring Premier stallwart Steve Belcher. Of course returning to the fold are key players on both sides of the ball with Premier experience. Jay Taylor at QB, Chris Taylor at RB, Stuart Cribbes, Gavin Collins and Simon McEvoy at OL.

Defensively the Tolley brothers Ben and Scott return to form part of a formidable defensive backfield. Andrew "Snake" Day leads the defense from the middle linebacker position supported by the experienced Chris Ellis. Offensive Lineman Dean Bryan moves to Defensive Line boosting a unit that features leading tackler Lee Hutton and "veteran" Dickie Carr.

2010 though sees plenty of new talent for the Saints. On offense Tom Northcote and Ken Snider, both standouts at Oxford University, bring youth to an experienced offensive line. Dan Brown steps up from Division 2 football to join the Saints and secures the "blind side". Tight End Eliott Howes has proven he is ready to play Division 1 football with a breakout performance in the pre-season.

Several new offensive backfield players will provide a change of pace from the ever bruising Chris Taylor. James Burchell (rookie), Mike Oluwole (Oxford Cavs) and Kyle Micallef (Plymouth University) all have the skills to score from anywhere. Americans Eric Perkins and Bryan Lewis add to an already strong receiving corp. One of the highlights in the pre-season has been the play of rookie QB Alec Sperling. Throwing 3 touchdowns in his first game in pre-season, Alec also has a solid pair of hands on him.

An already strong Saints defense is boosted by the signing of Americans Adam Cartwright and Austin Wilcox at Safety and Defensive Tackle respectively. University of Plymouth standout Gatis Kozlouskis has proven his credentials at Corner. John Burchell will join a Linebacking corp already bursting with talent and Marco Pinder returns to the Saints also at Linebacker.

The 2010 Saints feature a mix of both youth and experience with depth at all positions. The season kicks off on Sunday 25th April with a hard hitting encounter against the Birmingham Bulls (Away). The Saints won both games last season, but both encounters were close affairs. With Birmingham boosted from the folding of the Redditch Arrows, this game will be no easy task for the Saints.

The season doesn't get any easier with Division 2 Champions the Leicester Falcons joining the division and Division 1 2009 semi-finalists the Tamworth Phoenix also in the hunt. Nottingham Caesars, South Wales Warriors round out the opponents for 2010.

The Saints have a tough season ahead and the club welcomes all to come and support us through out the season.
