RB Chris 'The Horse' Taylor rampaged through the Arrow's defence on Sunday, gorging himself on 126 yards and 4 touchdowns off 19 carries. Taylor's efforts played a major part in Oxford’s 56 – 0 drubbing of a depleted Redditch Arrows team.
Taylor had his best day as a Saint, passing for 229 yards & 2 touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown.
Oxford had the ball first and after a short drive was held by the Arrows defence. The Arrows offense took to the field and was immediately hit by a brick wall also known as the Saints defence.
Big tackles from defensive MVP Chris Ellis & DT Stephen Bentley ended the Arrow’s first drive quickly and the Saint’s offence returned to the field. A couple of good runs from C.Taylor set up the Saints just inside the Arrows half. Jay Taylor dropped back to pass and for a second straight week he found WR Steve Belcher streaking down the sidelines. Taylor hit Belcher in full stride and Belcher outpaced the Arrows secondary for a 45 yard score, Belcher kicked the PAT, Oxford 7 – 0.
Into the 2nd quarter & the Arrows offence still found the going tuff against the Saints ‘Pain Gang’ defence. With the heat & humidity starting to take its toll on the Arrows small squad the Saints running game started to pound out the yardage behind their big O-line. Two 2nd quarter touchdown runs from C.Taylor (both from inside the 10 yard line) and an extra point from Belcher effectively ended the game as a contest. Oxford up 20 – 0 at the half time break.
The 2nd half saw more punishment for the Arrows. A thunderous hit from Stuart Cribbes & Andrew Day combining on the Arrows RB saw the ball pop lose & Saints Matty Richards dive on it to recover the fumble for Oxford. Offensive MVP Jay Taylor took full advantage and fired a scoring strike to a wide open Phil Ghouldie from 18 yards out, C.Taylor slammed in a 2 point conversion, Oxford 28 Redditch 0.
The Saints defence gave the ball straight back to Oxford after a huge sack from Lee Hutton & Adam Newman pinned the Arrows deep in their own territory. C.Taylor bulldozed his way into the end zone behind the blocking of Day and James Canavan from 2 yards out, Belcher tagged on the PAT, Oxford 35 Redditch 0.
The game entered the 4th quarter & the Saints continued their relentless onslaught of the Arrows.
A 19 yard jinking run into the end zone from Phil Ghouldie saw his 2nd touchdown of the day, Belcher kicked the PAT, Oxford 42 Redditch 0. With the game done & dusted the Saints were able to empty their bench & give some game time to their fringe players. The young guns didn’t disappoint for the Saints. A first ever catch from rookie WR Adam Armstrong (a 32 yard bomb from J.Taylor) set up the Saints on the 3 yard line. J.Taylor plunged over for the touchdown, Belcher slotted the PAT, Oxford 49 Redditch 0.
Oxfords Tristian Orr then intercepted his first ever pass for the Saints and raced it back 27 yards to set up another Saints score. Chris Taylor scampered in from 8 yards out for his 4th touchdown, capping off a great personal performance, Belcher again netted the PAT, Oxford 56 Redditch 0. Johnny Dover picked off the Arrows QB to end any hopes Redditch had of a consolation score and the Saints ran out easy winners.
Head Coach Chris Janes commented “I was really pleased today, we kept going right to the end, we executed both sides of the ball today, we managed to get everyone involved, the younger lads performed well when they got in.”
The Saints next game is away to the Birmingham Bulls on 12th July.
