2017 Opponents Announced

The British American Football Association have now confirmed the 2017 competition structure

Following our excellent season and our championship victory over Cambridgeshire Cats on 11th September 2016, the Saints have been promoted to Division 1.

We’ll be facing some familiar opponents and also some new competition, in Division 1 Southern Football Conference Central (SFC1 Central).

The SFC1 Central will include:

– Ouse Valley Eagles
– Oxford Saints

– Solent Thrashers
– South Wales Warriors
– Sussex Thunder

The South Wales Warriors were previously competing in the Premier South conference but have voluntarily requested relegation. This is reportedly due to a number of injuries and retirements, leaving the Warriors concerned about their ability to compete at the top level.

In agreement with Russ Hewitt, the Director of Competitions for the British American Football Association, the Warriors will now be in SFC1 Central alongside the Saints, but will have a 2 year ban on postseason football. This means that they will not be eligible for playoffs during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

He has also confirmed that a 10 game season is still being planned. This likely means that alongside home & away games against the Eagles, Thrashers, Warriors and Thunder, the Saints will also play 2 cross-conference games.

Division 1 playoffs will be regional this year. Qualifying teams will play against opponents in the same division (either north or south) before the Division 1 Final , which will be the southern champion vs the northern champion.

Russ Hewitt has also confirmed that the London Hornets will be promoted from Division 2 to Division 1, which will create equal conferences. They went 10-0 in the 2016 regular season but lost 9-0 to the Cambridgeshire Cats in the semi final.

The 2017 season is shaping up to be an exciting year and we’ll be providing details of our game dates as soon as they have been confirmed.

Oxford chairman Graeme Taylor said: “Everyone at the Oxford Saints is looking forward to our first season back in Division 1. With the new division alignments, we have a perfect opportunity to test ourselves against some excellent programmes.

“The opportunity to face new opponents, as well as rekindle some old rivalries with Solent and Sussex, who my first game with the Saints was against, is something I’m sure all Saints fans will relish.”

“We look forward to visiting and welcoming all of our forthcoming opponents in the 2017 season, and hope all of our fans will join us for what will be another fantastic year of Saints football.”
